So it’s been awhile, but my laptop has been out of commission and it’s been tough to post. I recently saw the movieMama. This movie was definitely not what I had expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The film is about two young girls who are taken to a small, abandoned cabin in the woods, and left alone to survive. They quickly realize that they are not alone, as the spirit of a woman inhabits the cabin and decides to take over the role of their new mother. The girls live out five years in the cabin until they are discovered by two men working for their uncle.

The girls are taken home to live with their father’s brother, but they have many psychological issues and are not accustomed to living in such a civilized situation. As the oldest of the girls starts to make progress, her sister does not. As they grow closer to their new guardians, you find out that their “Mama” has come to live in their new home to protect them.

It gets pretty creepy! I wont give away any more of the story, but the end is good! I reccommend seeing this movie!

Apartment 143

Just finished watching the film Apartment 143. I was surfing the website that I normally use to find new horror movies when I found this one. I have been pretty lazy today and decided to not read the premise, but rather just watch the movie and find out what it was about. Turns out, this movie was about paranormal occurrences (which I loooovveee) that ended up taking place in my hometown, which is amazing because nothing interesting ever happens here. Okay, here it goes…

The story takes place in an apartment building, where a father, his four year old son, and his teenage bitch of a daughter are living. The mother is no longer alive as she has just been killed in an automobile accident. The family began to notice strange things happening in their house shortly after the death of the mother and decided to move to get away from it all (we know that never works).

Furniture moves on its own, there are loud noises throughout the house, and it seems as though the family can hear someone else moving around in their new apartment, but upon investigation find that no one else is around. They call in a team of scientists to help them figure out what it going on. They set up cameras and sound equipment, as people usually do in these situations, and end up finding some pretty interesting stuff. I wont give away much more of the plot, but basically, some scary shit gets caught on tape. All those who are witness to the paranormal phenomenon also see much more material evidence than many do in other films which makes this movie kind of interesting. The acting isn’t bad, the graphics are decent, and the production value is pretty good overall, but there is one thing that really bothered me about the movie.

As the story progresses you find out about what happened to the mother in more detail, but things get progressively more intense in the house. Each time some scary shit happens or pops out, no one in the fucking place seems to be scared. It seems, if that stuff was really happening to people, that they wouldn’t be as calm and willing to stick around as the characters in this film were. Even the family seems to be okay with it all, a little too okay, as you will notice if you decide to watch it.

All in all the movie was pretty good, the acting, like I’ve stated, wasn’t bad and there was actually a well developed story-line throughout most of the movie. The main scientist is a dumb fuck in my opinion (because of his explanation of the phenomenon), but who knows, maybe scientists see that kind of crazy shit happen all the time and have just gotten used to it?

Urban Explorer

Okay, this movie was not quite as good as the last I reviewed, but it was interesting just the same. It takes place in present-day Berlin where a group of young foreigners are spending their holiday. There is a couple in focus, the guy is from America, and the girl from Venezuela. There are two other girls who join up with them from various parts of the world and also a guide who grew up in the city. This guide is hired to take them on a tour of the underground of the city and show them things that they would never get to experience on a so-called “normal tour”.

As they are making their way through the dark and definitely creepy underground, the girlfriend starts to get extremely annoying. She is frightened of everything and is constantly insistent on turning back and heading home. Luckily for the horror movie fans however, her terrible actor of a boyfriend makes them carry on. The 5 group members decide to explore a new area, but have an accident that leaves the guide indisposed, unconscious, and about 20 feet down some abandoned shaft.

The two girls head back and try to get some help, while the couple decides to stay with the guide until they can be rescued. Suddenly, some behemoth of a German finds them, and plays the part of savior. You assume that he’s the help that’s been found, but you quickly find out that is not the case! I will keep the rest of the story for the movie, but all in all, it was decent enough to watch. The acting was terrible at some parts, the girlfriend really bothered me (personal preferences I guess), and I happened upon a version that did not have English subtitles when the man was speaking German. I think I got the gist of it, but who knows! Watch it at your own risk, I enjoy everything, even the most terrible of horror films, so I may not be the best to recommend.

The Awakening

It’s been much too long since I’ve posted here! My internet in China made it almost impossible to gain access to certain websites and Tumblr happened to be one of them for me! It’s time to get back to it.

Last night I watched a film called The Awakening. It was a story about a woman working during the 20th Century as a paranormal investigator. She was a completed sceptic, and had built her career and name by debunking numerous different ghost stories and sightings. She was a woman of science and was not easily swayed until, one day, a man shows up at her door asking her for help. He works at a boarding school for young boys somewhere out in the country and wishes her to come with him at once.

He claims that the ghost of a small boy has been sighted walking about the school, and also that another boy tragically passed a few weeks before. He wishes for her to solve the mystery of the boy’s death, and also to discover the scientific cause for the appearance of this “ghost”.

The woman needless to say ends up taking the job and she travels to the countryside. She gets much more than she bargained for and discovers something that she cannot explain, nor prove to have an underlying scientific cause. The story in this film is actually a good one! It’s interesting and original, providing plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep you entertained. The story is nothing that you’d be able to predict from a mere synopsis, so I highly recommend that you watch the movie for yourself! The acting is great, the plot is well developed, and the movie in general is well-made and entertaining!

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark 2011

Okay, so I am a little late on getting to the review on this one. I watched it a few weeks ago because I have always had a huge thing for Guillermo Del Torro. I was sadly unimpressed. It was an interesting concept and definitely well-made, but it just wasn’t up-to-par I feel. His film The Orphanage is absolutely amazing. It has a wonderful plot, is creepy, and has great actors in it. Pan’s Labyrinth is another favorite of mine, although I don’t know if you could categorize it under the horror Genre.

This movie begins rather strangely. A man is fucks with his maid in order to feed teeth to some unknown being down a long stone shaft. You have no idea what the fuck is going on at first. After the whole ordeal, many years later, a little girl enters the scene and has to go live with her father and his new, much younger girlfriend in the same creepy, old, house. They are working together to remodel the house and are living in it as they do so. The little girl is an asshole to Katie Holmes’ character for most of the film, as she is going through a ‘difficult time’. Her mother doesn’t want her, and she doesn’t seem to like the new woman living with her father. There are strange noises and whispers that seem to flow through the air vents in the little girl’s room, and she even starts to talk to them.

I won’t spoil the movie any further, but basically, the family discovers a strange hidden room within the house and good exploring. They are unsure of what took place within the room, but they manage to let something out into the house.

I am not a huge fan of creature features personally, so I think it was difficult for me to enjoy this film. I had seen previews, but somewhere in my mind I always assume that if Guillermo Del Torror is making a horror film, that it will have some supernatural aspect involved. This was just too much of a monster film for my taste. It is definitely well directed and produced, and I wouldn’t go as far to call it a piece of shit! I was just expecting something different and didn’t fully enjoy Del Torro’s new idea. Watch if you please!

Has anyone ever seen this movie? It’s so fucking creative I love it! I have never heard of such a concept, but I definitely appreciate it! I guess you would classify it as a zombie flick, but it’s still up for interpretation.

The plot focuses on an older man who is a DJ at a local radio station. He works in the early morning, and one morning on his way to work he sees a strange woman outside of his car. She says something strange to him in a language he does not understand and then disappears. I don’t know if I’ve missed it, but they never really get back to that mysterious woman throughout the rest of the story (I just realized that now actually), but somehow, it doesn’t negatively effect the plot for me.

Anyway, this man and the two women working with him at the station begin getting strange calls where people are incoherent and repeating different wordage. They also start hearing news reports about a mob that is enclosing on a local doctor’s office. The people within the mob begin to kill people and are also repeating strange words and sayings as they do so.

I don’t want to give away too much more of the story line, but the film takes place in a small town where disasters are extremely uncommon. Everyone is panicking, or turning into another member of this strange mob. The two main characters discover, after their assistant becomes infected, and they happen upon the doctor who seems to understand it all, that people are being infected through words.

This is such an interesting concept. People are catching a virus, but it is not transmitted through bodily fluid, it is not airborne, and unlike normal zombie movies, not even the bites can inflict new victims. I watched this movie once before, but I was distracted upon doing so. Today I gave it a second shot and when I discovered what actually takes place within the movie I realized how genius it really is. I would recommend this movie to all.

It’s not extremely gory, or even extremely frightening, but it is definitely chilling when you think to yourself, “what if this were happening in my town?” No nudity, not even much cursing, but definitely interesting, entertaining, and worth seeing. The main character has an absolutely amazing voice. He speaks during the intro of the film and his voice instantly drags you in. Watch it!

I really can’t get over how much I’m in love with this old guy’s voice…

Pig (2010)

I just watched THE MOST FUCKED Up movie I have ever seen in my entire life. It’s called Pig and it’s absolutely terrible/amazing! It’s much more disturbing than even Martyrs and Funny games in many ways!

It’s full of gore, rape, cannibalism, torture, and much, much more. Seriously, when you think it’s as bad as it can get, it will get worse. This movie pushes the limits so much I can’t even believe it. It was hard, even for me to sit through, I’m still not sure how I did it! The entire film is almost shot in one straight shot. I can’t believe how good the acting was. The roles that the characters assumed were definitely not easy to play. If I had been the main girl in the film, I wouldn’t have been able to keep my face straight.

The story is about a crazy guy, who lives out in the middle of nowhere. He has a daughter who he calls “retard” who is mentally disabled and also pregnant with his child… He keeps her locked up in a cage while he sleeps in a trailer. He has three siblings that he is holding hostage and torturing throughout the entire film. Each of the three has their own specific scene in which he takes their pain and discomfort to a whole different level.

I don’t want to give away the plot anymore, because seriously you have to see it to believe it. But one specific part I have to mention, was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The maniac, after killing one of the victims, cuts her open, removes one of her organs, and puts it on/in her sister’s mouth… I am a vegetarian, so that was just a bit too much for me! Haha.

This film is not conventional in any way. There is no set script, rather just the few people in the film sporadically speaking. The main girl’s voice gets a little frustrating, but I was also watching the film online and the sound was about 20 seconds off from the scene, so I may have been frustrated long before her voice began to bother me.

I don’t know many people who would be able to watch this. I tried explaining the story to my roommate and she now thinks I’m crazy and disgusting. So watch at your own risk, but anyone who can get through it in a badass in my opinion!

The Ward

Okay, just finished this John Carpenter film, and I am kind of torn between feelings about it. I really ended up enjoying the story line, but any things about it seemed unauthentic. I had no idea that it was meant to be set in the 60s until about halfway through it. This for some reason bothered me too much. Probably unimportant, but what can I say.

It’s about a girl with an unknown troubled past, who is found after burning down a house and out into a mental institution. The entire time something strange is happening in her ward and there is some supernatural presence that begins to make itself known. She is constantly trying to escape, without success, all the while discovering that the ghost she is seeing is a girl named Alice who “used to occupy” the ward. There is a pretty decent story line in this one, so I would recommend watching it, but the acting isn’t amazing or even emotional enough for you to connect with the characters. The main girl is beautiful, yet lacks something for this particular part in my opinion. It saves itself at the end and I actually liked how it was concluded.

It’s not too scary and it’s not too gory, there’s no nudity and as I have already mentioned, the acting isn’t anything to write home about. So after writing this, I still think it’s enjoyable and definitely worth seeing!

The Clinic

I just watched an Australian flick called The Clinic. It was prettaayy, prettaay, prettaayy fucking awesome!

It’s a very interesting story about an engaged couple living in Australia. It is Christmas Eve and they are heading to the woman’s mother’s house to celebrate the holidays. The woman is pregnant. They decide they have too much father of a journey for the night, so they decide to spend the night somewhere and get to her parents the next morning.

They stay at some janky motel out in the middle of nowhere (why people always do this, I’ll never understand) where the woman ends up being abducted. He finance totally unaware of where she may be. She wakes up in a bathtub full of ice, there is an incision on her stomach, and her baby is missing. She ends up meeting other women on her search to find her missing child, only to discover that they are suffering from the same fate.

When you find out what’s going on and shit really starts to get crazy. The story line is so original, everyone is bound to enjoy it! It really gets to you. The ending is awesome, the story is awesome, and the acting is good as well! The production value was also pretty damn good. This is another one where the cover may make it look a bit cheesy, when in reality it’s totally worth your while! I say this is a must see. Although it’s not the scariest, it’s full of pretty decent gore and, as I’ve mentioned before, it actually has a story line worth giving a chance. DO IT!

Shallow Ground

Okay, now for another horror film I’ve purchased on the streets of China. This film is called Shallow Ground and it’s a bit better than the last film I reviewed, but not much. I don’t want to divulge too much, but here we go…

This film takes place in a small town which everyone seems to be moving away from. Tragedy has obviously struck, even though you being without the knowledge of what the tragedy really is. There are three police officers packing up the station, getting ready to close down for good. Suddenly, a naked boy shows up covered, and I mean covered, in blood.

He comes into the police station and gives the three a pretty big scare. They realize that something is seriously wrong with the boy when they test the blood found on him and determine that it comes from three or more people. Originally they believe that this boy is the doer of some vicious crime, but as the movie goes on, you find out he is quite the opposite, and much, much more than what they previously suspected.

It sounds cooler when I write about it, but this movie wasn’t that great. It’s worth watching I guess, but it wasn’t scary, the acting wasn’t very good, and I honestly don’t even remember much about it even though I just watched it. You do get to see some boobs in it, so if that makes up for lack of entertainment in other areas, then I’d say it’s worth your time.

The story is different from other horror films I’ve seen, but the twist at the end left me extremely unimpressed. All I have to say is bleeehhh… watch if you wish, but I think you can do without.

Iron Doors

Okay, I just finished a movie called Iron Doors. It was an indie film that was described on the back cover as “Saw-esque.” Upon watching the movie it makes sense as to why it’s described that way, but it may not be in the way you’d expect.

Saw’s main goal was to present it’s brutal gore to it’s audience, but this film was similar only in the fashion that it was a man, trapped in a room, who had to take action to determine his own life. The main character is a man, whom you know nothing about, who wakes up in a small room with no idea as to how he got there. He goes for the door, but quickly realizes that it’s locked, and there is no conventional way out.

The rest of the story is about this man trying to escape from this room. He meets another woman a little later on, but she doesn’t speak English and they have trouble communicating. I wont give away any more of the story, but I would recommend that you don’t waste your time with this film.

The main character definitely keeps you entertained, yet no reason is given for his placement in the situation, or for the woman’s. Things don’t really get resolved, and the ending scene will probably just make you hate the film. I understand what the writer was trying to say, but it’s just fucking bad writing. You want to watch a movie that has a proper ending, I’d say this film definitely lacks in that area.

It’s not scary, it’s not gory, and it’s nothing special. As I’ve said before, the only thing going for it is probably the acting, which still seems to interfere with the movie because the main character is much too optimistic for being in the situation he is placed in.

I’d say don’t waste your time, but hey, that’s just me.

The Loved Ones

I just watched my first horror movie in China… and I am happy to report that it was super fucked up!

It’s an Australian Flick (which I purchased for the high price of 5 kuai…) about a high school boy who lost his father in a strange accident only six months earlier. He is changed after his passing and you can see the distance that has grown between him and his mother, and also him and his girlfriend. One day after school a girl, whom he is not dating, asks him to the dance. He replies and tells her that he’s going with his girlfriend, an obvious choice to everyone he knows.

This girl ends up being fucking insane. I don’t want to ruin too much of the film, but he ends up waking up to find that he’s been taken prisoner by the girl and her father, that he is chained to a chair wearing a tuxedo, and has to basically act out the night of the dance as if they had gone together in her living room.

The girl is an amazing actress! She really had me believing that she’s fucking crazy. She’s uncomfortably sexual at times, she’s calm, happy, and sweet at others, and she’s pure evil for the rest of it. It seems as though it would be another attempt at a lame prom slasher flick, but it’s much, much more than that. I wish I could give it all away, but you’ll have to watch to see how incredibly fucked up this girl and the story really are. There’s tons of gore as well, but more after-the-fact type of stuff rather than them trying to make you watch some gross ass shit as it’s happening. I really enjoyed the gore in the movie because you see the after shot and can only imagine in your mind how brutal it was while it was happening.

This movie is awesome, don’t let the picture on the cover fool you! It’s totally worth seeing!

I moved to China!

Inside

Holy fucking shit. I just watched the movie Inside. It’s fucking insane. Probably one of the most, if not the goriest movie I have ever seen. There was a ton of blood and guts, the quality wasn’t something I would compare to Martyrs, but it was still awesome.

The story is about a woman who gets into a car accident with her husband. He ends up expiring while she is left to bear the burden of her almost to term pregnancy alone. She is obviously depressed and doesn’t seem to happy about the child on the way. On Christmas eve she is home alone when a strange woman comes knocking at her door. She is frightened, but calls the police and eventually believes all is well… It’s definitely fucking not.

Once again, so as not to ruin the story completely, I wont give anything else away. All I can say is that the movie is fucking crazy, gory, and has an interesting story line. I’d recommend it to all who love blood, although it’s not scary so much as disturbing.

Watch it!

The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Holy shit this movie is amazing!

I just finished watching it, and it’s definitely disturbing. I thought that while watching it that it was a documentary, but apparently it’s just a mockumentary based off the actual crimes that took place in Poughkeepsie.

So, the “documentary” is about a man in Poughkeepsie NY who apparently kidnapped, tortured, and killed people over the span on a decade. The movie really glorifies him and makes viewers feel hopeless, as if he is the smartest, most brutal serial killer anyone had ever seen. They also imply that he is still out in the world killing people, but that no one knows where to find him, or even where to being looking.

The killer apparently led police to his house where he wanted them to discover the tapes he had made documenting his killings and torture. The film is half interviews from those who were involved in the cases, and the other half are clips of “actual footage” taken from the tapes. It’s fucking insane and even though I have read that the film is not real, part of me doesn’t care and still believes it is because it was so well done.

I would recommend that everyone see this! It’s well made, it’s captivating, and it really leaves you with an eerie/uncomfortable feeling. Whoever wrote this really has a fucked up mind because the shit that the killer does is very creepy. It was released in a few theaters in select areas, but from what I am reading it’s very hard to get ahold of. It was never released on DVD and there is still no mention that it will be. From what I’ve seen online in reference to it, it may never be released due to copywrite issues. Good thing I’ve discovered a place to watch free movies online! I’ve been wanting to see this movie for ages and could never find it. Luckily I’ve found it on this amazing site!

Shutter

Growing up I couldn’t stand Dawson’s Creek or Joshua Jackson for that matter, but he is in this movie and it definitely wasn’t ruined for me. I know there is an Asian/original version of this film, but I have yet to see it. I’m sure it’s somewhat better, but the American version is still totally worth watching.

It’s about a pair of newlyweds who movie to Japan (I think it’s Japan, I can’t remember) for the husband’s new photography shoot. He is a well-known photographer and has been to Asian many times. His new wife travels there with him for the first time, but quickly learns that he knows more people there than she had realized.

She becomes interested in something called spirit photography upon seeing a strange picture in her husbands dark room. The image of an unknown Asian woman keeps appearing in the shots and she wants to know why. The husband is plagued by strange occurrences, his best friend dies, and more and more strange thingsbegin to happen to the couple. The wife believes that someone is stalking them at first, and then begins to realize that her husband is not the man she thought he was.

This movie has some good scares, a lot of which really make you jump. This movie is really well made, but the story line is what brings everything together. The very end, as in most movies, reveals the spirt that’s been plaguing the couple and makes her story known to the wife and to the audience. It’s vveerrryyy errriieeeeeee! Everyone should see it, it fucking rules. Even if you don’t enjoy the acting or the movie, you can’t say the story line doesn’t keep you watching.
